A book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

MUSING: So...here we are. *deep soul sigh* Oh the microagressions! I've finally watched the critically acclaimed, now (and rightly so) many award-winning movie. My thoughts about this 'funk in your right eye' directed groove about so many things that not just us Black writers have experienced and continue to experience in dealing with and working in the American publishing world, but also a story about a Black man and his woes in his own personal intrasocial bubble, mainly his family dealings was...

Got damn familiar if you are a Black person who stepped into writing anywhere during the early and mid-2000's. You've heard, seen, and probably lived this story personally. If you are a Black writer in the later generation, you are the wave that are experiencing the rest of the basket-weaving ceiling of crap that we have been going through with the publishing world and their pick-me fake diversity initiative. This movie was very familiar, very triggering. It took many stories of authors in the indie world and out of that they have had to survive in any way to tell stories by creating pen-names and writing in a genre that they knew would help them manage the interesting publishing world or in Monk's case just to write in it due to bull and eventually survival for his family.

My personal writing story has its own interactions with everything Monk went through, so while watching, all I could do was laugh from crying because I was just witnessing the backroom stories I've heard and experienced over the years, live in front of me, and frankly, it was kind of triggering. Beyond that, as I said, this story was also a dissecting lens at Monk himself and his own inner issues, and frankly in my opinion, his own battle with antiblackness as a writer in a mainly white academic and literary publishing world. I have seen him as the writer and these constant discussions about his very thoughts to this very day in the Black writing community and Black academic community. It makes the ending of this movie, even more on the nose and laced in sullen irony. Which also is why this movie is so good. As a Black writer, we deal with so much, hope for so much, and battle, so much, how do you survive and tell our voices, which means ALL our Black voices (because we all deserve our stories) without feeling marginalized in a messed system truly not built to foster us as they do themselves.

The full cast were *chef's kiss* extraordinary in their roles, from the leads to the secondary to the supporting and I mean that. Everyone added layers to breaking down topics of family dynamic concerns, elder care, personal health care, relationship/identity recognition and growth, and then some. In my opinion, there's even an underlying note of the need of mental health care in our Black families when dealing with transitional life care/elder care and the care of adult children's own needs as well.

This story is not new for us Black writers, but I for damn sure am happy that it's been told and put out there to document our struggles and conversations. It's not going to change a damn thing for us, but it acts as a guide for future Black writers to hopefully navigate the mess. But also... work on your own safe spaces as well. Well done.

RATING: 5/5 Books 📖📕📖📕📖
Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-59641110715881789812024-03-04T14:30:00.001-06:002024-03-04T14:32:08.877-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): CAPTIVATING THE KING [📺K-Drama Ting's/🏆2024 Fave]

CAPTIVATING THE KING "A time to learn Baduk" K-DRAMA MUSING:
[Watch on Netflix, 16 episodes] 🏆2024 Fave

GENRE: Period Romance, Historic Melodrama

SUMMARY: A historical melodrama that deals with the cruel love story of King Yi In, who is in a political crisis, fighting for the throne, and Kang Hee-soo, who approaches Yi In for revenge.

QUIP: Captivating the King has been one of Nettyflix's most talked about and buzzworthy shows going on right now and I have been sitting on my hands waiting to watch this one. Finally, all the episodes dropped and I just finished it. I absolutely enjoyed this slow burn of a period drama. Our ML Yi In played by actor Jo Jung-suk was a brilliant force throughout this series on his journey to eventually be King. He took on a Machiavellian and Macbeth tour deforce that had me applauding the machinations of his character's strategic mind and his softer side as well. As you watch this series, you are introduced to Yi In and his love for the game Baduk, also known as 'Go' in English. Historically, this is an ancient game rooted throughout Asia that is similar to checkers but more in the deeper realms of chess. The game is often used to teach one how to be more strategic in battle and political/social interactions.

The importance of our ML's love for this game is something us viewers must keep in mind while watching this whole series because we become the spectators to our ML's epic Baduk game. Every character is a piece in the game. This leads to our FL Hee-Soo played by actress Shin Se-kyung. She was lovely as our docile but independent and free-spirited character, who was taught by her father to play Baduk. Her role is very important as well, think of her as the Queen in chess, in disguise because for her to play this game, she must dress as a male.

The dance between our two leads is not just about the captivating attraction between the pair. Nor is it the interlaced interlude of the possibility of a 'boy love' dynamic going on between them (it's very important and part of the game). There are layers of intrigue going on here to protect a kingdom and right a very evil wrong. The twists and turns in this show was great. The slow burn with it all was worth it. My only issue was with how great the chemistry was between our leads, our FL was a horrible kisser and it was as if she was afraid to lean into the intimacy. I hated that with a passion. This is a flaw with that actress if you watch any of her other works. However, the series still was a great period drama, one that again made me want to learn Baduk and it is our FL's goal to learn from the best...the then Prince our ML which takes her on a harrowing journey as well.

We have a wonderful ensemble cast which including our supporting cast who help our leads work out their journeys. I loved our ML's 'right hand,' he's always a great actor to see in these dramas. If you are looking for drama and intrigue, watch this series. The ending is a little lackluster but, for me, I get why it ended up the way it did considering all the meat and potatoes that it gave.

RATING: 5/5 (Baduk Pieces) ⚫⚪⚫⚪⚫

KISS-O-METER: 4/5 💋💋💋💋(It would have been more if our FL did not kiss like a mannequin)

Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-36903530277096128062024-02-29T17:48:00.001-06:002024-02-29T17:48:23.152-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): IWÀJÙ & KIZAZI MOTO: GENERATION FIVE [📺BHM✊🏾DOUBLE FEATURE TV Watch]

IWÀJÙ & KIZAZI MOTO: GENERATION FIVE 'A Leap Into the Last Day of Black History Month ✊🏾Double Feature Watch' Quip -
[On Disney+/Hulu]

Introduction: It is the last day of Black History Month in February, and also happens to be a leap year. This is the longest we've ever been given to celebrate us. No wonder folks tried to shake up our month and stir it up with a whole lot of mess. However, in this month, we had a whole lot of amazing lovely moments, including this being Ersher and Bey's Highlight Month. (Both wanna be in my broke pocket, and both gonna have me doing my own concert in my backyard since I can't get donations for tickets to Mr. Raymond's concert, but that's a story for another time). Today, I wanted to sit back and end this month on celebrating my tribe across the sea, and enjoy some Afrofuturism/African Futurism in animation. So, let's get into my two watches for the end of Black History Month, which remember, my people were forcefully brought here, and many generations later, our cousins came through continued immigration, we the African Diaspora contributed to the growth of this country, and my African ancestors were the foundation with the our Indigenous cousins, so we celebrate Black and Native AMERICAN histories 365. Thank you.

IWÀJÙ SUMMARY: Tola, a young girl from a wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert, discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds.

QUIP: WEPA! It is finally here and I'm proudly happy to have watched some of this show in abated breath. I've been anxiously waiting for this series to drop since we heard whispers of it back at D23 and here we are. Coming in at six episodes, we step into the beautifully scaped Afrofuturistic Nigerian, Lagos-inspired world of Iwájú and I enjoyed every episode given. Though there are only six episodes, I do hope that Disney continues to believe in this series and allows the creators to bring us more! This is a show for the whole family. We are introduced to young Tola who ends up on a journey of learning about her city's true life by meeting Tola. They both embark on adventures that introduce us viewers to the culture and society of Lagos in the future while learning what friendship is between the two of each other.

I so love that we're seeing African animation and fantasy stories on Disney because as a Black American, our cousin's voices, (including our own in America) continue to be sorely overlooked, undermarketed/budgeted, or reproduced by other voices not of our own. So support this series please and after you finish watching, I suggest that you also watch the behind-the-scenes extras.

RATING: 5/5 Lizards 🦎🦎🦎🦎🦎

KIZAZI MOTO: GENERATION FIVE SUMMARY: Ten African creators present stories featuring new worlds of advanced technology, spirits, and much more.
[Also on Hulu/Disney +]

QUIP: This anthology gave us various Afrofuturistic and Afrofantastic stories from across the African continent. Torn apart from her sister and her children, Celie faces many hardships in life, including an abusive husband. With support from a sultry singer named Shug Avery, as well as her stand-her-ground stepdaughter, Celie ultimately finds extraordinary strength in the unbreakable bonds of a new kind of sisterhood.

MUSING: It took a quick blink for this musical film adaption to drop on streamers after releasing in December with high acclaim and mixed views. I'm glad I took my time in waiting to watch it. My background with this story is simple, as an older millennial (xennial) I grew up when the original film 'The Color Purple' was released. I grew up being given the book by Alice Walker to read and I was an adult when the book adaption was made into a musical funded by many but mainly Ms. Oprah Winfrey. I thought it odd back then to adapt such a book into a Broadway play, but they did it where I wanted to see its early runs with Fantasia as our iconic Female Lead Celie, and they made it work to the point that it is now a movie.

So let me prefix my thoughts with this. There was a lot of muddled commentary surrounding this movie within my community about it being a musical. I understand that via my own confusion behind that, however, I appreciate the art of musicals, a craft that is dying. There is a delicate balance in bringing musicals to film because one has to interweave the songs that made the Brodways classics such a popular medium for viewers with that of the Hollywood acting medium in order to keep people invested and not become exhausted over the juxtaposition of songs. To do that, you need a director who can take up such a task and who is intimately close to the original IP of the story.

I have to say, our director Blitz Bazawule, and cinematographer Dan Laustsen gave us a take that I honestly had to get used to. The visuals were beautiful, breathtaking, and perfect. Our director gave us a listful history of Black American culture and our history crafted through Alice Walker's own literary craftsmanship and the historic masterclass/iconoclast of Black American dance via icon herself choreographer Fatima Robinson. The visuals were giving. The history was giving. The notes of layered social/community disconnect going on around Celie and her sister as young girls were lightly given. However, the problems I had while watching that made it disassociate from this musical version as a movie is simply this...you can not tell a story as deeply rich and detailed as Alice Walker's Color Purple without rushing through or editing the story by losing/rearranging, quite a bit of the story.

This is where those complaints about this being a movie and not the same as the 1985 film version become stunted. As the marketing for the version always stated, this is an adaption of the Broadway play, which the Broadway play is an adaption of the said book. When you have so many 'adaptions' going on, you get a word-salad of a story, and that's what I felt when watching this. Everything was snippets, Celie barely spoke, and the touches with bringing in some of the nuances from the 1985 version are very minimal which would have brought this movie some more nuance only in the point of it being a new film version and not a stage play. From some of the buzz, many of the better songs from the play were edited or dropped from this film which added a disservice to bringing more roundness to the characters and for me as a viewer into getting into the characters' emotional development/journeys (this includes our secondary characters as well). This made ALL of the characters suffer in my opinion.

The songs given I did enjoy and everyone sang their butts off and made the songs their own. I still have my own bias and prejudice in a few songs dropped back into this new version saved from the 1985 film that I liked better in the OG version versus this one, but that again, is just my own bias. I still enjoyed what everyone gave and shared. The standout stars for me were our FL's young Celie (Phylicia Pearl Mpasi) and older Celie (Fantasia Barrino) of course, as well as our young Nettie (Halle Balliey), and Sophia (Danielle Brooks). I did enjoy and felt the dedication Taraji P. Henson gave as our new titular Suge Avery, as well as budding Hollywood Renaissance man, Coleman Domingo surprising me by showing that he has musical chops as well. The overall casting was 'chef's kiss'!! Everyone did what needed to be done and I smiled at seeing all the brilliance in this film.

With all that I have to say, for those younger generations just being introduced to this story or people who never saw it in general, my suggestions with this franchise is this: Read the book, watch the 1985 version, then watch this new wonderful version as an abridged soundtrack-cliff-notes musical version.

I end with my rating and saying this, our ancestors' stories deserve to be told, in every period, from every class and background. From triumphing over trauma to being loved and dazzling in brilliance. I love seeing our stories, even if sometimes the woes are there. Our stories need to be told and given the same big-budget funding to be seen across the screen.

Standout visual moments in the film: The letter visual of returning to the Motherland and The Elder Tree.

Missed moments: The fields of purple flowers, 'Celie & Nettie' Never Part song, and 'Time to Go' piano moment.

RATING: 4 1/2 out of 5 Purple Flowers 🪻🪻🪻🪻

[Time ta' go - Color Purple 1985]

Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-57305561358392682312024-02-23T16:03:00.001-06:002024-02-23T16:10:06.103-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): TYLER PERRY'S MEA CULPA [📺Movie Watch]

TYLER PERRY'S MEA CULPA 'I was here for the visuals' Quip:
[On Netflix]

GENRE: Thriller, Mystery

SUMMARY: A criminal defense attorney takes on the case of a seductive artist accused of murdering his girlfriend, but when burning desire takes hold, things get hot -- and dangerous.

QUIP: Let me start out with...ya'll already GD know. 😜I sacrificed for you all in this moment...I kid. Outside of that, the story...if you read Addicted by Zane this is the same damn story just remixed now with a lawyer and without the sex addiction...or is it? *slow blinks*

I tell ya...this steamy plagiarism was interesting until TP had to put his touches on things which makes the web of intrigue going on with strong actors and Kelly getting better with her own acting, slowly unravel until you get that, OWN/BET+ ending that you kind of see coming from the start. Ultimately, again...I was just here for the visuals and I'm VERY satisfied with that. Like. Standing applause for our one naughty sex scene (because you know if TP is gonna give you extra, he's also gonna give you some damn good smex, along with some sexual cringe too...he needs to work on his issues with sex, anyway) and a wonderful soundtrack throughout. Sadly, this story has been written about fifty eleventimes in Black Romance Lit...I too have contributed to it as well as a trope and you can find this same movie made in Black indie movie circuit and Tubi with ease.

I give a thanks to the cast for getting that check though, and making Chitown beautiful. That is all.

RATING: 2/5 (Paintbrushes and a giggle about that horrid ending) 🖌🖌

STEAM-O-METER: 10/10 👅👅👅👅💋💋💋💋💋
Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-44087778003276755692024-02-22T22:22:00.004-06:002024-02-22T22:22:59.311-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER SERIES [📺K-Drama Ting's/🏆2024 Fave]

AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER SERIES 'A It's been a long time waiting' Quip:
[On Netflix, 8 episodes] 🏆2024 Fave

GENRE: Fantasy, Action, Family

QUIP: So. And no, (as I was worried) the two might start similar, but they do diverge into their own solid individual stories. Based on a popular webtoon, 'Marry My Husband' stars two of my added list of favorite K-Drama actors, FL: Park Min-Young (Fave IT Gal) and ML: Na-In Woo (who I affectionately call Korean Brendon Frasier). This drama was unfairly speckled with BTS production drama due to our FL's personal life, however thanks to the popularity of the show and buzz the ratings have been through the roof, so good job to the cast and crew!

Getting into this rollercoaster of a show, everything from the beginning was a whole lot of 'camp'! By 'camp' I mean humor and rightfully so in how our FL had to adjust to her out-of-body time-travel back to several years before her horrific trauma of a marriage and murder. Through this journey, we are immediately kicked started into her formulating her rightful plan for revenge. This pulls us viewers in as we invest and root for our FL through the whole process, even if we are gritting our teeth, throwing items at the TV, and then some. Our villains are HORRIDENOUS with no redeeming factors and I love this for them, because again...there is a plan, and that plan MUST happen at all costs, and I was all for it.

Without spilling anymore, I'll say our ML was a gem as well with his own interesting connection and secret. You'll love the chemistry between our FL and ML they truly worked well together in this drama. You'll also love the secondary characters, you'll love the comedic beats, especially those dealing with questions with time-traveling (I wish there was more of that just because it was written so well to make us laugh) and you'll despise alllllllllll the villains. Now this drama could have done well with editing towards the end, some viewers felt that we did not need some things...however honestly, in the context of what needed to happen, we did need those things due to the laws of equivalence and that's all I'll say to that. Find out if our FL gets the revenge and personal HEA she is planning.

RATING: 5/5 cats 🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈
KISS-O-METER: 7/10 💋💋💋💋💋💋💋

Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-71219277412139753682024-02-14T12:53:00.000-06:002024-02-14T12:53:02.045-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): A SHOP FOR KILLERS/A KILLER PARODOX [📺K-Drama Ting's Double Feature]
A SHOP FOR KILLERS/A KILLER PARADOX 'ASSASIN DOUBLE FEATURE' WATCH:

[HULU & NETFLIX, 8 EPISODES]

GENRE: ACTION, THRILLER

NOTE: ML = Male Lead, FL = Female Lead

QUIP: Let me start with a...ooowee...murder...kill...kill. I chose to do this as a double feature for you all because each series was eight episodes, and frankly, I ended up binging both back to back of each other, so they are running into each other. Hence...this double feature post!

Let me start with Nettyflix's 'A Killer Paradox', before I hit you with the synopsis, I'll give you my quip. This show is a wild one. From the purposely shot chaotic cinematography, which was perfection, with inserting you into this manic world and POV of our unfortunate ML Lee Tang, played by Choi Woo-shik. A.K.P is based on a popular webtoon, that explains it just like this:

"When one accidental killing leads to another, an average college student finds himself stuck in an endless cat-and-mouse chase with a shrewd detective who will stop at nothing to capture him."

Again, what a ride. There are slow-burn beats in this series, but it is an interesting watch, especially for those of us, who also enjoy the eye candy that is our over-zealous Detective Jang Nan-gam, played by Son Suk-ku who has an interesting backstory for why he is rightfully no-nonsense. I swear he had me fussing at him, when I should have been rooting for him. I couldn't help it. This show made me worry about our ML. Are these manic moments? Is this the path of a sociopath? What is going on? The clunky style of this storytelling, added to the deliriousness of the story, however, it did sometimes take me out of the story with confusion about what exactly was really going on in the beginning of it all. But, I did still enjoy this light vengeful retribution tale of accidents with purpose.

RATING: 4/5 Dogs 🦮🦮🦮🦮

Now we move on to Hulu's 'A Shop for Killers', and for my feature of hit you with the 'whoa' opening up, this show hits you with it and kept me invested to see just where this story was going to go. I do enjoy me some movies and series that give me solid assassin drama/beef's with all the great fighting going on. I also enjoyed seeing my favorite Nine-Tailed Fox, actor Lee Dong-Wook, showing up as an uncle, Jeong Jin-man with a lethal secret that gets his niece Jeong Ji An, played by actress Kim Hye-Jun, caught up with all types of murder-kill-kill-drama, that she did NOT ask for and dropping her into a lethal assassin world that her uncle had plans about. The twists and reveals in the worldbuilding was great. Nothing is as it seems. There were slow beats that were with purpose because the story starts so heavy and fast. This leads to the synopsis:

"A niece who lost her parents and grew up in the hands of an uncle who runs a shopping mall faces a new truth after her uncle's sudden death."

I definitely enjoyed this wild story of vendetta, but whose? I can't share that. Check this out. This one does leave you with a cliffhanger, which sucks, because nothing is guaranteed with second seasons and the Mouse. So due to that, and a few open-ended questions, my rating keeps it from giving it an all-out top grade.

RATING: 4/5 Stuffed Bunnies 🐇🐇🐇🐇
Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-50468112132818067222024-02-07T18:46:00.003-06:002024-02-07T18:56:49.645-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): THE MARVELS [🎥 Movie Watch]

THE MARVELS 'GOT DANG IT GOOSE' MOVIE MUSING
[NOW ON DISNEY +]

GENRE: FANTASY, ACTION, SUPERHEROES

MUSING: So, let me start this musing just like this...😏

A BIG Middle finger to the incels, the Noteps, the male women's hater club members, and those men who felt it in that little space between their arse and bawls to try to muster up boycotts because they didn't like female leads. Middle finger to those at Disney who felt the same thing, to disrespect not only our director Nia DaCosta, but also every single person involved with this movie, same thing to those globally who were anti-tw*ts. Middle fingers to those who had their hands in stalling this project to the point that it got railroaded in post-production and forced to have constant nonsensical edits and reshoots that it didn't need (allegedly). Middle finger to those at The Mouse, who failed this movie in marketing and again as I said above, railroaded its distribution run where it fell into limbo and then got hampered due to the strikes. Middle finger to The Mouse for not standing behind this project and causing chaotic distinction, where we ended up with a final product that deserves a 'DaCosta' director's cuts, because of all the BTS BS that she and the cast went through, including appropriate rearranging of the film (more Park Seo-joon!!! *fan girl screams) and appropriate marketing like was done for previous Marvel films.

Now, my thoughts about this film.

My sis SPECTRUM IS IN THE HOUSE!!! I wanted more...MORE of her...because I truly was here for three people, Monica, Kamala...and ya'll can guess the third later in this post.😏But anyway...I enjoyed the film for what it was, a superhero team-up that hit us with some great collective comedic moments that felt like I was reading an actual comic. This showed how deeply our director was a comic reader and fan herself. Respect that. We got amazing fighting moments that not only, in my view gave a nice little nod to a classic MCU phase fight scene, but also, made it their own. I will say that this movie suffered outside of the BTS stuff, due to mainly...just that honestly. I felt like I was watching this movie struggle with balancing to insert everything from the MCU-Streaming-verse, with that of the straggling leftovers from Thor and the Avengers movies. That made this sad. It really didn't even give me much left over from Carol's own movie except for flashbacks and 'oops' I'm sorry...my focus was elsewhere.

All of that kind of felt one noted and as if a lot of in-between meat and grease were missing. Especially, with the opening of this movie in introducing us to our main protagonist. Outside of this, I stress again, I did enjoy this movie. The same connection that everyone got with Tony's care and protection of Peter, that same energy is here in spouts with our tag team's care of Kamala (Mainly Monica). I loved a specific moment of the trio connecting in trying to work out their specific snafu on Carol's ship, that was so classic comic book filler.

Anyway... I move on to say again...as a K-drama lover... PARK SEO-JOON! Coming through with the Th'oreal hair (See what I did there? This K-Drama was for the adults. This was a tapestry of beauty in the journey of love between an artist/painter who happens to be deaf and the struggling aspiring actress who happens to be drawn to this man whom too many people misunderstand to be aloof or a brooding individual. The true story behind this man with so many layers becomes slowly revealed as our FL (female lead: Shin Hyun-been) and our ML (male lead: actor Jung Woo-sung) find themselves drawn to the curiosity of connecting with each other, which eventually leads them on their path of love. This story is so mature, and by mature I mean emotionally. It sets on your heart like eating a comforting bowl of your favorite soup or stew, but you end up going through the quiet rough moments that come with taking that leap to trust your heart in loving someone society feels is unconventional and vice versa for the other person due to how they've experienced life.

I have to say, this K-drama was an adaptation of a J-drama from 1995. The way I wish we'd be brave and adapt this in the US as a limited series (because the deaf/hard of hearing, disabled community representation here SUCKS) and pray by all Gods of all cultures that they keep it POC centered and not fook it up by straying away from the story or the incredible soundtrack! However...let us hope, this stays where it was, in Korea and Japan.

RATING: 5/5 (Paintbrushes) 🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌

KISS-O-METER: 8/10 (sweet/not steamy) 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘

Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-75444180535587669772024-01-25T12:23:00.002-06:002024-01-25T12:52:37.575-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): MY DEMON [📺K-Drama Ting's/🏆2024 Fave]

MY DEMON 'Sponsored by your fave blue tin cookies & The Bodyguard' - Musing
[Watch on Netflix] 🏆2024 Fave

GENRE: Pararomance, Romantic Comedy, Thriller, Dark Fantasy

SUMMARY: Heiress Do Do Hee (Kim Yoo-jung) is an adversary to many, and Jung Koo Won (Song Kang) is a powerful entity when the two cross paths, an intertwining fate of unforeseen situations embarks them on a journey between a parable's quest in unforeseen love and unwarranted chaotic battle.

MUSING: Y'all know I love me anything that makes me feel like I'm in my books and this did that. You know the ones in the blue tin that we keep the sewing kit in with the two good cookies while the rest are, eh? As well as, the #1 coffee candy of K-Drama's workaholics/corporate abused, Kopiko.😆

This show ended up being one of my added faves for the new year. For my fellow 'Mericans who aren't familiar with K-Dramas but want to dip your toes into it, if you enjoy the show Lucifer, add that with a dash of your fave CW supernatural shows but subtract the angsty annoying badly written teens and throw in mid-twenty adults with sense, who look good, then you have this show. If you are familiar with K-Dramas, then this show is essentially what Goblin should have been had you given us age-appropriate characters set in a chaebol family and corporate thriller giving you something soooooo much better. IJS. No shade to the OG foundation show 'Goblin'. This show also has notes of 'Doom at Your Service' and my personal fave, 'Tale of the Nine-Taled.' Even with all of that as a reference, this lovely pararomance, thriller, and rom-com stand on its own.

As I explained in the summary, My Demon is essentially a modern parable wrapped in a dark fantasy and romantic thriller. This was one show where, from our leads to our secondary characters, everyone complimented each other and played well off of each other. Hot off his run on 'Sweet Home' our Male Lead: ML, plays the overly arrogant Demon Jung Koo Won, whose task in the human world is to make deals for souls and happily live about his long-lived life doing so. The fun begins when his perfect day..including his perfect personal cake gets hijacked by our Female Lead: FL, Heiress Do Do Hee.

What do you do when you end up on a blind date and the perfection in your life goes to Hell...a Hell, that you usually send people to and you're no longer in control?

There is SO much more to this story than what I share with you all, and it's all fun, and hilarious (the comedic beats were great), and romantic. One of my faves in the K-Drama world (outside of the two popular young leads who were perfectly cast together) makes a brilliant appearance as well. Though this show was a pararomance, I did feel the connection between the leads, they were wonderful. However...the steam was directed to be a little lighter, which coming from something like 'Destined With You', which was another pararomance/Dark Fantasy that I enjoyed, if you have a lead meant to be with a hot 'Demon'...

I'mma need them to swallow face, cus like...they're grown and so is your audience.😫

Anyway, our leads still connected lovely and their kisses weren't puritan, nor were they rigid at all with each other. This was a blessing. The dark storyline, mixed with learning both backgrounds and journeys towards each other made for a great watch, and one which made me happy about saving this on my watchlist.

RATING: 5/5 (cakes & crosses) 🎂✝🎂✝🎂

KISS-O-METER: 6/10 😘😘😘😘😘😘

Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-87678903437891862432024-01-22T13:32:00.001-06:002024-01-24T20:07:46.304-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI [📺K-Drama Ting's]

WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI 'A work your everlasting nerve, but the community is great' Musing -
[Watch on Netflix]

GENRE: Small-Town Romance, melodrama

MUSING: Listen...this was marketed as something sweet, whimsical, and in the vein of the popular (which I super enjoyed) Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha. I'm here to tell you...this ain't that. It's half of that. Like, let me be straight to the point. I hate this show but loved half of it, and it makes me so angry and sad because I adored all the actors. When a story makes me HATE one of my FAVORITE Female actresses (Shin Hye-sun), a super disconnect and problem is going on in that writing room, and I mean that with my whole chest.

I truly don't recommend this series, UNLESS you can ignore the female lead: FL, like fast-forward everything with her, and just enjoy the secondary characters around her and my other fave male lead: ML (Ji Chang-wook). The small community in Jeju is wonderful...again the problem is the lead's hair pulling/blood-pressure-raising storyline and her handling of her foil and SUPER BISH of a villain. It is also the FL's seemingly descent into regressing into long moments of immature 9-year-old behavior in micromanaging others around her in regards to the trash she's going through and even in her rekindling, second-chance romance (she literally lackadaisically laughs/smirks at other's concern/logic that she lacks, it pisses me off). She is SUPER childish, and it's out of nowhere, and I hate it! Everyone around her has to do the work in fixing the trash situation she's in, and that's...that's a good thing, but also is bad because it reflects back on her again with her annoying personality of not handling business as she can do (as everyone TOLD her early on)! This same willful blindspot of hers applies to other situations dealing with her family, and her friends, it's really bad.

There are tears and all the emotions because of the threads of the drama and even history given throughout the series. However, who are the MVPs of this trash...as I said everyone around our FL. But mainly her MOTHER!!! Also, her sisters and friends, who frankly, I would have liked more of the series to focus on.

RATING: 2 out of 5 (Dolphins) 🐬🐬

KISS-O-METER: 5/5 😘😘😘😘😘

Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-78692004919562420922024-01-12T15:21:00.000-06:002024-01-12T15:21:36.143-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): A GOOD DAY TO BE A DOG [📺K-Drama Ting's]

A GOOD DAY TO BE A DOG 'Just another day with a curse and finding love' - K-Drama Musing
[Watch on Viki : 14 Episodes + 2 specials]

NOTE: Ignore the specials (ep. 0 & 15), they are replays of episode 1.

GENRE: Rom-com, Urban Fantasy, Historical Fantasy, Office Romance

SUMMARY: The series is about the romance between a woman and a man, the woman who is cursed to transform into a dog when she kisses someone, and a man who is the only person who can break the curse but is afraid of dogs due to a childhood trauma.

MUSING: I tuned into this rom-com based on a webtoon for something light again, and because the element of fantasy was attached to it. I always enjoy both lead actors: FL Park Gyu-young and ML Cha Eun-woo individually in other shows, so it was nice to see their chemistry. This show pretty much deals with how would you function day to day knowing that you and your family are living with an odd curse. A curse that turns you into a puppy and that you are the one-shouldered with breaking said curse?

This backdrop made for a cute fun story. There were moments where it drew out, I honestly had this K-drama playing as background noise at times, not that I needed more from this simple fantastical storyline. I enjoyed all the main cast, which included our true main protagonist (who I also enjoy as an actor). What I didn't enjoy were the micro-villains. Those s.o.b.s were just dropped in annoyances. However, the small moments for when the MV's were dealt with I could have enjoyed more of that, along with the slice of comedic moments (including a hilarious ghosting moment and car moment that I can relate to 😂). I genuinely enjoy it when a good ML is created. Eun-woo emitted so well in playing this lead that you knew immediately that he only had eyes for our FL and he was committed day one, even through the misdirects. I enjoyed that. As for the rest of the story...you pretty much can logic out the illogicalness of the vengeance linked to the curse early on which is why it took me out of the story and a few of the loose threads that I'm still wondering wth about.

Moving on to the ratings...

KISS-O-METER: 10/10 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘

Usually, I hand out, fives but this time, that sucker hit tens for Cha Eun-woo!! With five episodes in this series, Echo is the latest entry in the highly anticipated Phase 5 of the MCU streaming branch. If you are not familiar with our antihero...soon to be vigilante, strum back to her intro in the MCU series 'Hawkeye' and strum up her comic canon as well. Episode one gives us a brisk reintroduction and a beautiful world-building prologue into who is Maya Lopez, but before that, what is her cultural roots which...if you have watched, Marvels 'What if...' season 2 it feels as if there are linking branches, also in that story it was a different tribe. Both powerful and beautiful intros with a connecting purpose...I believe and after finishing the series, I was correct.

Anyway, back to that intro of Maya...whew...FIYAH BADASSARY fighting going down. I give a huge hats off and chef's kiss to the fighting choreographer! I also appreciate the music director for the lovely soundtrack that we get to bop to wherever Maya is at. So far, I am invested in this show. For the misogynist in those musty houses, women can keep your attention by whooping all the ass in clean, boss fight scenes that don't need to uphold the ridiculous image of sexualizing a woman's body or support the trope of elevating your fave male superhero...and episode one lets you know that immediately with a banging (literal) fight moment that introduces Maya to Fisk's world. *chef's kiss* hmph! This series has layers that I deeply appreciate, from Maya's Choctaw heritage/ lineage, and mythos (changed from the comics), to her family and community dynamic, her fractured connection to Fisk, and her own inner battles with self while coming into her power. Musing:
[On Netflix, 8 episodes]

GENRE: Comedy, Action, Drama

SUMMARY: When the head of a Taiwanese triad is shot by an assassin, his eldest son, Charles `Chairleg' Sun, heads to Los Angeles to protect his mother and brother, who's been completely sheltered from the truth of his family until now.

MUSING: Listen, let me get these two things out of the way. I had this on my watchlist waiting patiently for it to drop, to tune in for THEEEEE Icon Michelle Yeoh, and I ended up staying for Mr. Fine Justin Chien who plays the eldest brother Charles...whew!!! Okay, back to the series. With this one, I'm going to hit you with a light spoiler, but not really because if you watch the trailer, they let this one out for you. Ahem...

Chile...if you come from a nefarious background and you're living incognito and then decide to take your cover further by having kids...or you escape with your kid(s) and take them or one uncover. STILL train the kid(s) up in at least some form of self-defense while that kid(s) is growing up zero to the walls clueless about your underground life. So at least if anything happens (a pickpocket, a bully, wtf ever), they'd know how to do a little bit of basic fighting. My gosh! Street life 101!!!

I promise the way my eye kept twitching through this show!! Mainly at the younger brother Bruce, played in perfection by Sam Li. I mean I understood why this narrative about a Taiwanese American family in LA with a secret one unbeknownst to the first-generation son was the way it was. It had to for it to go how it did and for the story in this collective work to flow right in this world...I guess. But LAWD!!!! My mind just doesn't run that way in my view of how to protect my safety from nefarious things in the street, IJS! (Not that I have any type of experience in that, I don't). I enjoyed the family and friend dynamic in this backdrop of an ordinary life versus a syndicate life. The fighting was lovely. I enjoyed the build-up of two brothers being reintroduced to each other in the face of keeping the family safe...really keeping their mother (the center of everything) protected. The mysterious reason for that, in which the youngest son has no inkling about, is very on point and badass in the sense of their shared, equally mysterious family background to him.

I also enjoyed catching some of those little pop references to C and Kdramas and whatnot (I'm also so watching a lot of those as ya'll know). And...CHURROS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Moving on, I will say this...if you're waiting for our icon to do her damn thing, like I did...she will not. Not all the way and she's earned that right. Leave it for the younger generation and sprinkle us with a taste of the magic that you still have. Though...I'm still sad about it.

Overall, I do hope Nettyflix will allow this show to return. I will not get my hopes up. I don't trust these streaming heauxes. So until then...enjoy a good action romp with some great comedy and world-building.

RATING: 5/5 Suns 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞
Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-74590323273260672892024-01-09T10:43:00.001-06:002024-01-09T10:44:51.535-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): THE STORY OF PARK'S MARRIAGE CONTRACT [📺K-Drama Ting's/🏆2024 Fave]

THE STORY OF PARK'S MARRIAGE CONTRACT 'Giving me all the time-bending romance & fantasy' Musing -
[Watch on Viki, 12 episodes]🏆2024 Fave

SUMMARY: The Story of Park's Marriage Contract tells the story of Park Yeon-woo (Lee Se-young), a Joseon Confucian girl who time-travels 200 years in time to the year 2023 after the mysterious death of Kang Tae-ha (Bae In-hyuk), her husband.

GENRE: Rom-com, Fantasy, Historical Romance, Contemporary Romance, Suspense

REVIEW: So, I needed something a little light after my action-packed dark K-Drama watches last week and TSPMC came THROUGH!!!! Lately, some of these rom-com K-Dramas have been a little dull and chaste for my taste. A little miss with the hit if you get what I'm saying and I'm not sure why. However, a few gems do get released, and even fewer that give my blend of fantasy. So, I was so happy that this buzz-worthy show that had been on my wait for it to drop list actually ended up being, SO good!!

TSPMC, hits you with one of Romancelandia's favorite global tropes, the infamous 'Marriage Contract', plus soulmates and turns that puppy upside on its head. I LOVE the out-of-the-box way they did it (even though I have seen the time-traveling bit done before in past K-Dramas), and they held on to the mission of that mess right out the gate in episode 1 as soon as our Female Lead's backstory was introduced and she fell (quite literally) into her shenanigans by meeting...our Male Lead in the future! But it all is done with a twist, plus a great squad tag-along (something that doesn't happen too often in these types of K-Dramas). WHEW.

This story was about interconnection, fate, friendship, family/toxicity of family, independence, freedom, growth, and the power of love. The ending hurt my feelings. It didn't wreak my eyeballs but it did make me sad, but everything ties up beautifully, though...I wish it was a smidge longer for additional character reasons. You all will understand when you watch. Anyway, I loved it and the kisses were not dry, at all. We also got a light grown and sexy moment, so...YAY!

NOTE: The moment with the G&S...was staged oh so chaste, but...still pulled off the romantic steam. Like...it was a nice little brief cute moment).

RATING: 5/5 Butterflies 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

BONUS [KISS-O-METER]: 6/5 Kisses + Heart For Light Grown & Steamy 😘😘😘😘😘 💜

Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-42099882362075904812024-01-07T09:47:00.003-06:002024-01-09T11:04:20.553-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): DEATH'S GAME PART II [📺K-Drama Ting's/🏆2024 Fave]

DEATH'S GAME - PART II 'The Game Continues' A Happy New Year K-Drama Musing Review:

[On Amazon Prime, 4 episodes: Series Total 8 episodes] 🏆2024 Fave & TOP TIER 💜Recommend Watch

READ REVIEW OF PART I [HERE]

GENRE: Psychological Drama-Thriller, Dark Melodrama, Action, Dark Urban Fantasy, Romance

SUMMARY: Death's Game is an ongoing South Korean web series written and directed by Ha Byung-hoon, and starring Seo In-guk and Park So-dam. Suicide, Bullying, CA, etc.

MUSING: I'm back with part II of Death Game and this highly anticipated show STILL has me by the throat! All my fave K-Drama actors are now in a new rotation and I'm loving it!! Now, I've spoken about how K-Dramas, if they have amazing writers, are known for their injection of layers like croissants or phyllo dough into their shows. Having now finished Death's Game, which is based on a popular Webtoon, my MF'ing gosh, this show is not only a fave for the year, but it's a TOP Tier fave. Each episode is broken down by different POV's that the main lead ends up experiencing as his 'punishment' and those 'stories' all begin to interweave into a lesson that is heartwrenching.

I mean, this show straps you in on a rollercoaster of all the emotions and entertainment joy! I loved EVERY POV given, however...episode 5-6 were hands down some bawls to the wall brilliance and entertainment. I mean the way I was hollering at the screen in glee!! There were previous moments where I had this same experience with a past POV, (episodes 2 & 3), though they also left me in sadness, but baby...episode 5-6 (really 6 itself) was some *chef's kiss* fun! Which leads me to the final titular ending...it was so wrong and heartbreaking, and...was the lesson that was forever threaded throughout the show finally sucker-punching our ML where it needed to. Death is an ambivalent so-so and so, whew!

Death's Game was truly that of chess where only Death was playing. This one will stay with me for a long while. I hope there is NEVER a US adaption. Part II came back and hit us with rounding out the rest of this epic story with three final episodes. I don't appreciate that wait...they could have just dropped it all, for just three episodes, but I digress. Park was dressing and looking fresh still. The action was actioning, the villains continued to villain. They hit us with a little more romance finally but said...aht...aht...aht...we got some more fighting to do and that's what they did. Yes, in total, this series suffered from moments of dreariness that for some, it could make you a little bored. However, the intensity of the story and the threading of historical horrors make for an enthralling watch even with some of the cons of splitting the show up, minor slow moments, wonky threads, and the haberdashery of a mishmashery of a thrown-together romance.

With this story, it made me want to look up more information on the history of Korea during this time. I connected well with the story. You want to know what happens to these characters, the family of 'The House of Golden Treasure'. SQUAD!!! Spitting on the villains and rooting for the heroes is a given, but when you find out even more of the backstory of our motley crew, and the extended voices that this show is also sharing a lot of knowledge...man. You gotta give the minds (the writer's room) behind it respect! I give it to K-Dramas, they hit you with croissant and phyllo dough layers of world-building and character backgrounds which sometimes, hits you in the fee'fee's or Ceddy's gut. *coughs*

Now back to my gasping...don't turn away at the end...DO.NOT.TURN.AWAY. You will be hit with some major WTF? and might have to rewind with a 'How Sway?' and a 'Wayment? Excuse me?!!!' I'm now finishing it up because I needed a light watch while waiting on my other K-dramas to finish their thang. I was not disappointed. I was given Rowoon who just rounded out his yummy romantic hot boy run on 'Destined With You' with lovely steamy kissing. Go watch that on Nettyflix...(parts of it gave me Sin Eater tea aka Lenox vibes). To showing up in this chaste Joseon period rom-com with a touch of drama.

I truly enjoyed it and had nice laughs. We have Rowoon linking up with actress Cho Yi-hyun from ' All of Us Are Dead' (Go watch that too, on Nettyflix) and these two good-looking actors were adorable together and connected well. They played our lead Matchmakers who worked to gather to get folks together who were having issues in connecting. I won't ruin the total story in spilling the tea, but this is a fun light watch and our villains were villianing, *chef's kiss* The supporting cast was also excellent with intertwining stories that made for an enjoyable watch.

Now because the chemistry was so chaste, it ruined the use of these two beautiful youths. Like, I was not asking for them to be swallowing face, but...I also was not asking for kiss your hand innocence. So...it failed the 'Kiss-o-Meter' like HARD. But not so hard that I was annoyed (for a change). I also wanted a deeper connection with the two that didn't feel as if two best friends 'light' liked each other although...with this story, it didn't take away from it because again...this is 'The Matchmakers.' I did have a cringe issue with one of the pairings because of the 'vast' age difference as well...like...no ma'am and no sir.

With that let's get into the ratings.

RATING: 5 out 5 nuptial ducks 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆

KISS RATING: 😘😘Two kisses out of five (because it was chaste & cutes, and there was only ONE kiss between the leads. Because next to Shaft, next to Iceberg Slim, next to Avery Brooks as Hawk and Star Trek's Captain Sisqo, next to King T'challa di Black Panther...and next to the Godfather, Black Men's beloved forever icon is this historic icon right here. Bass Reeves.

Bass's story is not his own to tell anymore. It's the story of men, and long co-opped and stolen to be whitewashed and told by white men. So, when you get a historical icon like that... his fans get prickly.

Look...I am a lover of history and my Black culture, so get mad at ya mama's on what I have to say about this show. So, I repeat again for those who don't believe me. Lawmen: Bass Reeves came about LONG before it was given the titular 'Lawmen' title that is under the umbrella of Yellowstone and its creator Taylor Sheridan as a movie shipped around in the indie/Sundance Market. It is the love child of British actor David Oyelowo and his production company.

Now it is important to remember those two facts. Stick with me here.

As David shipped it around, it got buzz. This is good. It needed more money and production. It got it, from Mr. Yellowstone himself, who was already looking to expand the world of his own franchise, and what easy way to do that and make it look 'inclusive' is by grabbing this fave lawman's story. Now we are at the present day of the show.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves, suffered for muted writing. It suffered from disjointed storytelling and editing all because of what I previously stated about it being redeveloped from a movie to a television show. It also suffered do to that curious behind-the-scenes production and writing scene in two folds. First from David's original production company, and second from our well-known Yellowstone staff. This is why you have a show where it's supposed be about Bass Reeves, but the voices around him end up being more developed than the man himself, and the majority of those voices were white men and women. Which was unfortunate.

History of the time about everyone was lost in this show, sanitized for a specific gaze. I think ya'll know who, and it ain't Black viewers that watch. I will say this...the strongest episodes of the show, feature Bass's wife and his daughter. It's something similar to Yellowstone. I believe that's due to the strong women writers that are part of the Yellowstone writing room, which is a good thing, HOWEVER, don't get it MFing twisted. The same thing that was lacking in Yellowstone is what we are watching live in color here, the loss of a cultural writing staff in abundance and not just two to three token consultants.

This is what makes the show muddled and feel like they were following a watered-down 'Black history paragraph' in a history book's outline. This is what makes the show have spouts of brilliance mixed in with a sad sludge of mediocrity. It also is again a revisionist tell, helmed by a British Black man but actually also written by White folk. So the history they drop in is lacking and wrong on a lot of accounts just for the drama.

The writing of Bass and our people is very puppeted and rigid, it's formulaic, and it's a dry outline as I said. It's why Black literary writers say that, some white writers can not write the Black experience, but only can parrot it. This is why you have an opening moment of the show of portraying an unclear servitude movement with Bass fighting in the Confederacy. The writers make it seem as a choice, and not that of a forced moment of slavery and survival. The horrible lack of regard in showing how Black and Indigenous folks worked together is not there and should be. We don't even know his co-marshal's story, the kid just popped up outta now where. Like...

The use of a Black Indigenous child's death as a tool of inspiration for Bass was just gross and the conclusion of that was still not totally satisfying in regards to that note. There were just a lot of missed opportunities here and the confusing choice of non-linear storytelling at times due to his 'work' was not developed well. Bass never really had a good solid voice. His wife's own background only popped up briefly in the final episode, so her own voice was still revealed to be muted. Just...this show was about one of the first Black US Marshals and it truly ended up being about everyone around him, except him and his family and their Black community with their intersectionality with others while living through the budding Wild West and Jim Crow.

Because the latter part of that...is EXCEEDINGLY important to the fact that this is a former slave...a Black man with legal law Marshal granted rights who spoke MULTIPLE Indigenous languages. That's a boss move, and one that is not laced through this show...AT ALL. BRING IN Mario Van Peebles for some sauce and additional Black Western context please...who will also bring Black/Indigenous FEMALE writers with the same knowledge, dang!

Moving on, because of that I have three favorite episodes in this series, one focuses on the wife and her family's survival, and the next two involve the introduction and conclusion to one of my fave budding actors Y'lan Noel, known for his role in 'The First Purge' (He's on my list as a person to try out as T'Challa). Then it's the final. That's it and that's what worked for moi in this series.

I believe this show was bumpy because of where it started and now that it's getting its grease, including the popularity in high ratings, the next season that it did obtain will definitely fix some kinks. As is the nature of first-time seasons.

RATING: 3 out of 5 Marshal stars ⭐⭐⭐

Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-66561962696975978822023-12-29T10:34:00.000-06:002024-01-06T15:58:47.747-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): GYEONGSEONG CREATURE PART I [📺K-Drama Ting's/🏆2023 Fave]

GYEONGSEONG CREATURE - PART I 'Keep telling your historical truths while fighting creatures' K-Drama Musing going into the New Year Review-

[On Netflix, 7 episodes/ PART II 1.5.24] 🏆2023 Fave & Recommend Watch💜

SUMMARY: In the city of Gyeongseong in 1945, a group of young people thinking only of their own survival encounter a monster born of human greed and ask themselves what humanity is.

NOTE: My comments here are as an outsider looking in. That is all.

MUSING: This period K-Drama has been a buzzing/controversial wait-watch going on since the start of 2023 due to many, many things. The first of which was why I tuned in...Park Seo-joon!!! I've talked about this fella before in past reviews of shows. (You have to check him out in Itaewon Class, which is my FAVE by him, and What's Wrong with Secretary Kim). ANYWAY!!! I came for Park with his many...many...tailored and fresh and so cleant looks then ended up staying for a gripping as heck storyline. A storyline that brings me back to why this show has been heating up the Netizen's intraweb so hard outside of our ML and FL (Han So-hee, who is doing an amazing job on this show. Check her out in 'My Name' another fave of mine.).

With this story we are going back...back to WWII, a time when the world was being shook globally and this time we get a POV of an untold story of what was going on in Korea (Joseon) at this period. If you do a Google, it's a very interesting and long tragic dealing of colonialism, imperial invasion/occupation, and so forth, and when I say long...I mean decades! At this point, it begins to blend into WWII and we all know globally what was going down then. With this story, it fuses a little bit of HBO's Lovecraft Country, with that of the movie Overlord as they share the story of fighting against the generation-long colonization/imperial occupation of Japan and the horrific testings that would occur on the Joseon people, abductions, assaults, forced military recruitment for the opposite side, stolen businesses, etc as a backdrop about a story of family, community and local resilience. Because of what I just shared, this is causing angst with Japanese viewers who do NOT like to talk about that dark period in time, or at least be betrayed in such a light.

It's kinda like what we deal with here in the States with our special group of insurrectionists and whatnot who believe in historic revisionist erasure. This show is very controversial to the point that the actors all might end up banned and canceled by Japan and the fans there. With all of that...the lead actors continued with this project and welcomed all the smoke. Why? Because history shouldn't be erased or rewritten. If we want to not repeat the atrocities of human conflicts, then we must share the hard stories/truths. Periodt!

So...if Japan (or SK) ever decides to do this story about us here in the States...I mean...as an African American here, why would I ever get pissed about anyone sharing their hard truths? We're still sharing ours (and fighting to share our voices), as it's steadily being rewritten against our will. So...fight on! Tell your stories as creatively as possible. Bring on the demon hunters. Bring on the creatures and kick N*zi's arse globally!!!

This show rocks! So check it out because it might get pulled due to all the heat.

RATING FOR PART I: 5/5 Creatures 👾👾👾👾👾
Kai Leakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01846232776324205283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5688057028778438901.post-53523878798252897352023-12-27T23:57:00.005-06:002023-12-27T23:57:51.386-06:00Quips & Musings Corner By Kai Leakes (Movie & TV Reviews): MARVEL'S WHAT IF...KAHHORI RESHAPED THE WORLD - [📺TV Watch]

MARVEL'S WHAT IF...KAHHORI RESHAPED THE WORLD 'A OMG MY HEART' MUSING -
[On Disney+]

SUMMARY: A Mohawk woman ventures into the waters of the Forbidden Lake to help save her people.

MUSING: This story deals with a unique journey of the tesseract and that's all I'll share. I have to take a moment here with this one. I'm processing what I watched. Why? Because I literally just saw something that I had been working on for years as a WIP come to life and I am blown away in pride. It continues to show me how connected us creators are in our mental well of muses, and I am not just talking in the wind here. I have proof in my novel and the many notes that I have about this story. The chosen culture matches and everything.

I...am...floored and I have tears because this story was beautiful. I was clapping and yelling at the screen the whole time!! This was a great watch. I am again proud that whoever at Marvel brought them this story in this way was allowed to share it and actually work with the Mohican Nation. It really...really...worked!!! This story in season 2 of the "What if..." franchise is definitely my fave.
